Christians, Awake, Salute The
Morn
Text: John Byron,
adaptation by Thomas Fischer
Tune: "From All That Dwell Below The Skies"
Suggested Usage: Christmas Eve, Christmas Season.
“Christians Awake”
(Tune:
From All That Dwells Below The Skies”)
Christians,
awake, salute the morn
Whereon the Savior, Christ, was born
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Rise to adore mysterious love.
Which hosts of angels sing above
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
To
watchful shepherds it was told
By angel herald's voice: "Behold!”
Alleluia! Alleluia!
“I bring good tidings of great mirth
To you and everyone on earth.”
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Today God's
satisfied His Word;
Jesus is born—‘tis Christ, the Lord!
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Let joyful tidings here begun
Resound to praise the virgin's Son.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
To
Bethlehem the shepherds ran
To see the wonder God had planned.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
And found, with Mary, blessed maid
God's Son, the Savior, manger-laid
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Let
us, like shepherds, now employ
Our grateful praise--proclaim the joy!
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Praise to the Babe, who paid our loss
From manger poor to bitter cross.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
May we with
joy-full angel throngs
Sing, now, the glad triumphal song.
Alleluia! Alleluia!
He that was born upon this day
Now shines on us with glorious ray.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The lyrics of this hymn are derived and adapted from
John Byron’s, “Christians, Awake, Salute The Happy Morn”.
John Byron (1692 -1763). Byron wrote this poem in 1745 for his
little daughter Dorothy. On Christmas morning she found the
manuscript amongst her presents .The title was originally called
'Christmas Day For Dolly' but was renamed as “Christians Awake
Salute The Happy Morn” when the original music was added. The
music to the carol “Christians Awake Salute The Happy Morn” was
composed by J.Wainwright. The melody, Laast Uns Erfreuen
is used for this version to facilitate easier use.
